Out Of The Head And Into The Heart… The great Indian teacher, Nisargadatta Maharaj, said: “the mind creates the abyss, and the heart crosses it.” In Western culture, as in so many modern day cultures, most of our emphasis is on the mind--cultivating it, learning and filling it with information, and gaining knowledge. All you have to do is look at a school curriculum to know that this is the emphasis. The mind is so important, as is knowledge, but it is the heart that gives us wisdom. The wisdom we need to follow a path that creates joy for ourselves (and others) in this lifetime, the wisdom that tells us to be the kind witness to ourselves and our story, and the wisdom to follow our intuition. Many of us are disconnected from our heart and what it wants and so we are cut off from our innate wisdom. Yoga practices are designed to settle our body, quiet our mind, and drop us into our heart. One of these practices has the potency to do this swiftly and that is the practice of Kirtan--call and response mantra repetition. Mantra means to traverse the mind. These ancient mantras are like magical formulas that unlock the heart and all of its potential. It is the open heart that tends the world. We have one of the best Kirtan leaders in the world, Jai Uttal, coming to us at Love Supreme Projects at the end of month. We could not be more thrilled to have him and Nubia Teixeira with us! Let’s come together and tend to ourselves, each other, our families, our community and the world.
