Life Force There is a room at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco that is hard to forget. The Norwegian architects, Snøhetta, when drawing the building, made a special design for this one room, to accommodate seven paintings. It is shaped like an octagon and on seven of the walls hangs an Agnes Martin painting, all the same size. They are breathtaking. They are serene, profound, simple: perfection lying in the canvas' flaws. There is a circular bench in front of the paintings that you can sit on and contemplate the utter beauty surrounding you. I remember sitting there, taking a deep breath, feeling my mind slowing down and my heart opening—inspiration flooding my veins. I felt in touch with spirit in that moment. Prana is a Sanskrit word that I love. It means “breath” or “life force”. It is the thing that makes you breathe deep, that slows your mind down and brings it into synch with your heart. The thing that inspires you at a spiritual level. No motivation required. So what gives you Prana? What gives you your life force? What keeps the inspiration running through your veins, pushing you forward towards a more spiritual existence? Something all humans are innately after. Is it being in nature? Looking out at the vastness of the ocean? Floating in the sea? Listening to an incredible piece of music? Or looking at a painting that takes your breath away? Of course, a great yoga practice will most definitely do it:). I hope this summer, in whatever way, uplifted you and gave you a little more life force to propel you into the fall. We look forward to seeing you soon!
